Nevada home-school laws

Homeschooling is becoming a popular option to sending children to public schools. Many parents feel that their children can get a better education this way and there will be fewer distractions. There are some homeschooling laws that need to be followed with a home education program. There are some of the homeschooling laws for the state of Nevada.
A parent must enroll their child in a home school program. In Nevada a parent is defined as a person having legal custody of the child and has legal rights to the education of that child. When the parent decided to home school their child they must provide written notice to the superintendent of the school district that they reside in. A parent must have their child begin the home schooling program within 10 days after their child has been withdrawn from the public school. The parent must also provide an educational plan to the school district in which the child will follow. When this notice is filed the child is excused for the compulsory attendance stating that every child must attend school between the ages of 7 and 18. The home school is now their schooling program.
The parent or the educational provider has to develop an educational plan that the child is going to follow. There must be instruction in the areas of English/ language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. The child must receive instruction in economics, government, history, and geography. The skills levels will be determined so the child receives instruction at their grade and skill level. Children that are home schooled will still have the opportunity to take college entrance exams at the local school district during this high school years.
It is illegal to discriminate against parents that have decided to home school their child due to religious reasons. The school district or other agencies cannot discriminate due to religion. A parent can teach their religion as part of their educational program if they choose to,
Children that receive homeschooling can still participate in extracurricular activities within their local schools district of through the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association. They can participate in sports, clubs, and other activities. The parent has to inform and file paperwork with the school district stating that they would like their children to participate in these activities. Parents are responsible for all fees to participate and transportation to the practices or the clubs.
If a child has qualified for special education or related educational services the school district will provide these programs to the homeschooled child. The school district will write the individual educational plan for the child and educate the parents on the resources that are needed to educate this child.
If the child is ages 5 or 6 the parent does not have to file paperwork with the school district to educate their child at home. While the child can attend kindergarten they are not required to. By the time the child turns 7 they must attend some form of educational program. If the parent intends to home school the child they must provide written notice to the school district before children reaches their seventh birthday.
While a parent does need to file this intent to home school their child they do not have to get approval from the district. No family is denied. They do not have to specific the specific times, days, materials, and resources that are going to be used as part of the homeschooling program. No vaccinations are required but it is still a good idea for parents to keep up to date on their child’s medical needs.
A parent can use many different resources to educate their child. There are prepackaged curriculum and lesson plans that can be purchased. In some cases the parents may be able to apply for reimbursement of these expenses. The regulations for this reimbursement are still going through the government agencies. A parent can gather their own educational resource to teach to their children. There are a number of educational videos, workbook ,textbooks, and activities that can be used to teach the child.
These are the rules that a parent must comply with when home schooling a child in the state of Nevada. It is state law that all children from age 7 to 18 attend an educational program. The parents must file the proper paperwork with the schools and provide an educational plan in order to have their child home schooled and comply with all legal requirements in the state.
